FROM
THE DESK OF ALLAN LEVINE, Chief Operating Officer
Madison
News, Summer 2004
It's
nice to feel positive about the economy. It's been a while. Indications
are that companies who were reluctant to increase capital spending
are preparing to do so either for growth purposes or because it
is time to replace equipment or vehicles that were "held on
to a bit too long."

SUMMER
DRIVING
Madison
News, Summer 2004
Summertime is finally here. This is the time of year when we like
to take long, leisurely drives and vacations. During some of these
drives, we may be on the road for more time than we would like to
be. Keeping this in mind, below are:
Tips to Avoid Drowsy Driving
• Drive only when rested – Don’t
get behind the wheel if you feel fatigued, no matter when or where
you are driving. Get some sleep or exercise before you leave, delay
your trip, or let a rested person drive.
• Keep your mind alert – Listen to
talk shows or up-tempo music. Try to have company on long trips.
Change position often, making sure to keep your head up and shoulders
back. Keep your window cracked to circulate air. Chew gum. Actively
watch road signs and traffic.
• Find a safe place to stop – On a
long trip, every couple of hours or if you start to feel sleepy,
pull off the road for a break, stretch your legs and get some fresh
air. If you must take a nap, stop in a safe place. When possible,
spend the night at a hotel. Do not rely on coffee!
• Be careful about what you eat and drink
– Coffee, sugar, and other stimulants may give you a temporary
burst of energy, they do not ensure mental alertness. Drink water,
juice or soft drinks low in sugar and caffeine. Choose high protein
snacks over heavy or fatty foods. Avoid alcohol and medications
(including cold remedies). If you do require medication, speak to
your doctor to minimize the effects while driving.
• Drive defensively – Be alert and
prepared to prevent accidents. Watch the drivers around you, they
may be drowsy.
